security reminder: do not display the root password on the public network. it is recommended to use ssh keys to log in and turn off password login.
the example ip used in this article is the test network 203.0.113.45 (example), and the cost, bandwidth and configuration are real options.

vultr purchase process and computer room/configuration selection
log in to vultr, click deploy new server, select server type: select ubuntu 22.04 lts as an example.select server location: choose los angeles or new york, usa, close to the target users to reduce latency.
choose server size: it is recommended that newbies start with the entry-level model at $5/month (1 vcpu / 1gb ram / 25gb ssd / 1tb traffic).
select additional items: you can enable automatic backup or choose to add ipv6 or add ssh public key.
after the purchase is completed, record the ip and root password or confirm that the ssh public key has been uploaded for the next step of login.

first login and basic security configuration
log in using ssh: ssh root@203.0.113.45, or add -p to specify the port. example: ssh root@203.0.113.45create new user and grant sudo: adduser deploy && usermod -ag sudo deploy; and configure ssh keys to /home/deploy/.ssh/authorized_keys.
disable root password login and ssh port modification: edit /etc/ssh/sshd_config, set permitrootlogin no and passwordauthentication no, and restart sshd.
install basic security tools: apt update && apt install ufw fail2ban -y, turn on the firewall and allow ssh: ufw allow 22/tcp; ufw enable.
configure swap (if the memory is small): fallocate -l 1g /swapfile && chmod 600 /swapfile && mkswap /swapfile && swapon /swapfile and write to /etc/fstab.

select nginx as the reverse proxy/static file server: apt install nginx -y, systemctl enable --now nginx.example nginx site configuration snippet: server_name example.com; root /var/www/html; index index.html index.php; (add and ln -s to the actual file /etc/nginx/sites-available/).
php and database: install php-fpm and mysql/postgres as needed: apt install php-fpm mysql-server -y.
enable gzip and cache headers: enable gzip in nginx.conf and configure expires for static resource caching.
monitoring and logging: install htop, vnstat, and configure logrotate to control the amount of logs to prevent the disk from being filled up with logs.

after purchasing the domain name, set an a record at the domain name provider: example.com -> 203.0.113.45; also set the www alias cname to example.com.use certbot to apply for free ssl: apt install certbot python3-certbot-nginx -y; certbot --nginx -d example.com -d www.example.com.
cloudflare is recommended for accessing cdn: change the nameserver of the domain name to cloudflare, and enable cdn and dns resolution in cloudflare.
after configuring cloudflare's "proxy" mode, the real ip of the origin site must be allowed in the firewall to only allow access to cloudflare's inbound ip segment to prevent bypass.
performance tip: turning on http/2, enabling caching policies, and working with cloudflare's page rules can significantly reduce bandwidth and response time.
6.
ddos defense and high availability recommendations
low-traffic ddos: using the "i'm under attack" mode of cloudflare's free version is effective against common layer7 attacks.large traffic ddos: it is recommended to use professional ddos protection services or choose vultr’s billing/computer room with ddos protection.
network layer rate limiting and iptables rules: use ufw or iptables to limit the number of connections per second and syn rate to mitigate syn flooding.
backup and snapshots: enable vultr snapshots or automatic backups regularly and test the recovery process to ensure availability.
horizontal expansion: when the traffic is high, the traffic can be distributed to multiple nodes through the load balancer (vultr load balancer).

case background: a chinese blog targets american visitors, with a peak monthly visit volume of 6,000 pv/day, using static cache + cloudflare.selection and cost: use a $5/month vultr 1gb instance, open the cloudflare free version, and control the monthly outbound traffic within 300gb.
